Finally I had a nice opportunity to test one of the “new” tracking modes.
Singapore was celebrating it’s 50th and many events were planned across the islands. I usually don’t bother as it is hot but moreover crowded. As a family at least we wanted to see the air show which we had not yet in the 8 years we’ve been here and they said it’s great.
All over the place DSLR users, right to me a guy with a huge canon beige colored L lense – nice. Me with the X-T1 and and …. the XC 50-230, not the fastest lens and not the sharpest but got it for free when the X-T1 came out. The sky ugly, plain greyish color but very bright (aww and hot). But I have to say I was actually surprised that I was able capture quite some keepers. Switched camera to CL, Zone tracking and ISO fixed to 200.
Whilst we were waiting (me and my two sons) the show to start I checked the environment.
The Marina Bar Sands, CBD on the left and Gardens by the Bay in the front. This is jpg out of camera with levels adjustments.
The Singapore Flyer just opposite to the Marina barrage where the air show was performed.
Look at the crowd on the main building of the barrage.
Ah the show starts, ok not too bad., not really tracking here.
I’m trying to follow the flight and several green squares pop up, also not too bad, you can see the colors of the Singapore flag.
At the end of tele, hand shot as all and cropped. No this not a crash but some cool maneuvers.
This is a 100% crop and I think this is a nice keeper with good details. Mostly I wasn’t happy with the white balance but attempts in post processing weren’t that successful either. You can even decipher the words “Black Knights” at the tail, the name of this air unit.
Another nice one with good details and action where the fighters cross close by .
And a goody on our way out.
Firstly I’m thinking of changing to the XF 55-200 with the hope those few stops and tad more sharpness will give me certain benefits in certain situations. I find myself using tele quite a bit, e.g. concerts and here the XC struggles a lot. As per above I think it did a good job. So if you are not a frequent tele shooter this is a good value for money lens and very light.
As for the auto focus I think Fuji is improving and improving, the above combination is light and easy. For an enthusiast like me the autofocus improvement is a huge step forward. and I enjoy this events more as the hit rate is much much and much higher.
And yes the Air show is indeed always great.
